From building sites to building websites … with a little help from Business Link.
What do you do when when of your biggest customers decided not to pay? Sue? Struggle with cash flow for a while? Maybe even go under?
If your name is Andrew Wearden, you’ll put it down to experience, diversify into a relatively unknown area and have a thriving new business up and running within months.
This is what happened to the Dove Holes-based entrepreneur who had been successfully running Dove Architectural Hardware for four years selling high specification door and window furniture to the commercial market.
Andrew said: “One of our big house builder customers refused to pay a large invoice last November (2007) just as the downturn in the construction industry and housing market was starting to bite. We knew we desperately needed to fill this gap in income if we were to survive.”
Smart Move
“We’d designed our own website to promote the hardware business though and had received lots of compliments and enquiries from other customers involved in the building trades asking who our web developer was,” he explained.
“When they heard that we’d done it ourselves, they were extremely impressed and bizarrely we started to get orders for web development through from them too.”
Andrew had been quoted figures in the region of £3 - 4,000 to have the company’s website developed, which is what drove him to adopt his DIY approach.
Andrew added: “Designed by Dove, our trading name for the web design and publishing side of the business, began as a bit of a pilot scheme to keep cash flow ticking over, but as soon as we realised that there might be some long term mileage in the idea, it was clear that we needed some honest and impartial advice on developing it and increasing revenue.”
“That’s when I got in touch with Business Link as I’d found their website very informative in the past, especially when we had been looking for advice on debt recovery.”
Sound Advice
“Because this sector was all new to us, we really needed some pointers about what to charge, how to increase our productivity, improve our market share and how we could develop our technical skills further,” said Andrew.
“Our adviser sat down with us, reviewed our current set up and listened to our ideas and plans. We were really impressed with his level of local knowledge and awareness of what resources we could tap into and the market and sector we were getting involved with.”
Dove’s business adviser was then able to recommend some practical solutions which would move the business forward. This included details of local networking event they could attend to get their name known in the wider business community, free web-related workshops they could sign up for, to costing up their time accurately to produce a workable pricing structure.
And with tough economic times ahead, the adviser suggested reducing the stock for the hardware business to release more cash and trimming down the number of brands they supplied, keeping their best customers in mind.
Wonder Web
Andrew said: “As soon as we implemented these measures, we felt the positive impact. We went to see all the construction-related firms we already knew first and strangely started to get a lot more interest when we increased our prices - We are really committed to not ripping people off, but when we first started we were definitely selling ourselves short.”
“We’re also completely transparent about what you get for your money and our pricing system for website design and publishing is modular so most customers find something to fir their budget.”
Andrew and Lindsay Daniels-Hill, who works alongside him and also for Britannia Woodworking (owned by Andrew’s co-directors) have already attended free courses through Business Link ranging from writing for the web and search engine optimisation to Google tools. They’re now keen to get some training about Open Source software, giving them the advanced technical knowledge to develop more complex e-commerce websites and content management systems.
Local networking events have already provided them with several orders and many ongoing enquiries.
Profitable Relationship
Andrew and his adviser still keep in regular contact and he’s also more clued up about what the Business Link website can offer him now. “As well as the valuable debt recovery advice I got from it, we did recover most of the money, by the way - I’ve been using it for terms and conditions for our web services and for information on best formats for design briefs.”
So what started out as a basic self-taught web design has already brought in much needed extra revenue for Dove since April 2008 and in 2009 is expected to represent around 70 - 80% of the company’s total turnover.
In terms of margins, web design and publishing is proving more profitable for the company than the hardware side has ever been, so the plan now is to steadily grow that element further.
